Rotterdam skies

Around the middle of the Golden Age, Dutch landscape painting developed in terms of style development. There was great emphasis on the expressiveness of the composition. This was mainly expressed in the strong light and dark contrasts. Especially the cloudy skies became increasingly impressive. The aim was above all to emphasize the magnificence of nature ("God's creation"), which was often accentuated by the addition of separate elements, such as a heroic tree, a mill or a tower. The sky above Rotterdam is still as beautiful as in the golden age. Fortunately, you can photograph the sky today and you no longer have to capture such a beautiful image in paint. Rond het midden van de Gouden Eeuw ontwikkelde de Hollandse landschapsschilderkunst zich qua stijlontwikkeling. Er kwam en grote nadruk te liggen op de expressiviteit van de compositie. Dit kwam vooral tot uitdrukking in de sterke licht- en donkercontrasten. Met name de wolkenluchten werden steeds imposanter. Het streven was vooral de grootsheid van de natuur te benadrukken ("Gods schepping"), hetgeen vaak geaccentueerd werd door toevoeging van afzonderlijke elementen, zoals een heroïsche boom, een molen of een toren. De lucht boven Rotterdam is nog steeds zo prachtig als in de gouden eeuw. Gelukkig kan je de lucht vandaag de dag fotograferen en hoef je zo’n prachtig beeld niet meer te vangen in verf.
