Contrasting architecture

Rotterdam is a contrasting city. Not only the Rotterdam city dwellers are diverse, but the buildings also have major contradictions. Modern skyscrapers stand proudly next to the few remaining old buildings that were not wiped out in 1940 after the bombing. But also beautiful monumental buildings of post-war reconstruction, such as the Groothandelsgebouw, still claim their place among all the new buildings in the city. Rotterdam is een contrastrijke stad. Niet alleen de Rotterdamse stadsbewoners zijn divers, maar ook de gebouwen hebben grote tegenstellingen. Moderne wolkenkrabbers staan fier naast de weinig overgebleven oude gebouwen die niet in 1940 zijn weggevaagd na het bombardement. Maar ook prachtige monumententale panden van de naoorlogse wederopbouw, zoals het Groothandelsgebouw, claimen nog steeds hun plek tussen al het nieuwbouw in de stad.
