City trees

There are more than 160,000 trees in Rotterdam. They stand in streets, on squares, along roads and canals and in public gardens and parks. In addition, another 450,000 trees grow in natural green areas and forest areas. Together that is more than 1 tree per inhabitant! City trees have had to endure a lot. The climate in the city is quite extreme compared to the forest. The soil in the city is often heavily compacted, the growing location is too small, the environment dusty and dry, and digging activities are carried out close to the roots. Every year the municipality raises many kilometers of street. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to save the trees in street traffic. In Rotterdam staan ruim 160.000 bomen. Ze staan in straten, op pleinen, langs wegen en singels en in plantsoenen en parken. In natuurlijke groenstroken en stukken bos groeien nog eens 450.000 bomen. Samen is dat meer dan 1 boom per inwoner! Stadsbomen hebben het niet gemakkelijk. Het klimaat in de stad is vrij extreem in vergelijking met het bos. De bodem in de stad is vaak sterk verdicht, de groeiplaats te klein, de omgeving stoffig en droog en er worden graafwerkzaamheden uitgevoerd vlakbij de wortels. Jaarlijks hoogt de gemeente vele kilometers straat op. Helaas lukt het niet altijd om de bomen bij straatophoging te sparen.
